Sometimes its amazing how people "Shop" for churches. We have become a very consumeristic society, shopping for churches as if they were a new car... looking for all the features and extras that will make us "comfortable." Where did we ever get the idea that church is all about us?
Ben Arment up in Reston Virgina has a wonderful post where he talks about Christians demanding more meat... He writes...
"I've always felt troubled by phrases such as "I need to be fed" or "I need meat" when referring to spiritual growth. And not just because they're usually meant to be critical of a pastor's content... but I could never see this thinking in Scripture. Paul uses "feed" and "meat" in terms of where he expects Christians to be in their maturity, but it's never used by people to demand something. So I took a crack at it on Sunday...
Sunday's message [The Table - part 2] was the compilation of research from my own study of scripture, Ed Young's message series 'The Table' and John Piper's messages about spiritual milk. It's about not being a lactose intolerant Christian, but someone who drinks the milk of the word."
I look forward to each and every Sunday morning... and I always have... long before I became a pastor... I do go to church with a sense of expectancy, because I do know God is there and I will hear from Him. But I also have always gone with a sense that I am meeting with other believers to bring my worship to God... that Sunday mornings are about relationships... my relationship to God and my relationship to others. (Love God - Love people) Sunday mornings are not about me... Yes, we have all the creature comforts at our church... coffees... and a bookstore... and people there to serve... but the point remains... Sunday mornings are about God... and Sunday mornings are about reconciling others to God.
As I travel I am able from time to time to attend a lot of different churches. I never walk away without feeling God. It can be high tech, or high church... unashamedly seeker oriented or unashamedly believer oriented... It can be a new young pastor or a seasoned veteran. Doesn't matter... when the word opens up... God speaks to my heart. Whether its a verse or a hundred verses.
I go to church with the purpose of giving to God. I give my love, my worship, my time, my energy, my resources. And because of who God is... He never allows me to out give Him... He pours back into me... more love, compassion, mercy, grace... He blesses me with more resources, more time and more energy. Make no mistake... in my mind... Sunday is the most important day of the week... And I always know that God is going to show up and do something amazing. But I also know, that I am going to show up and let God know that I love Him... and that Sunday morning is a reflection of what I want to give Him the other six days as well... I am there to give Him me.
